DOJ: Teves released but still restricted

23 June 2024

DOJ Spokesperson and Assistant  Secretary Jose Dominic Clavano IV confirmed yesterday the release from house arrest of fugitive declared and former Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo “Arnie Teves, Jr.

This after the DOJ was informed by the Timorese Central Authority that Teves’ house arrest has officially concluded last Friday, June 21, 6pm, Philippine time.

Asec Clavano explained that a fugitive like Teves could only be detained for a maximum of 90 days under Timorese laws.

However, the release of the embattled lawmaker is subject to close monitoring.

Further, Timor Leste authorities were likewise ordered to secure all borders air, land and sea to ensure Teves won’t get out of Dili, which is the capital of Timor Leste.

"We confirm the release of Teves from house arrest. However, he will strictly be not allowed to leave Timor Leste until a final ruling on his extradition has been reached," Asec Clavano scored.

"We are working closely with our international counterparts in Timor Leste to ensure that the Philippine government may attain justice for the alleged victims of Teves crying for justice despite the evasive attitude of fugitive/terrorist designated and former lawmaker," the justice official added.

“The obvious goal of the other camp is to leave Timor Leste and rejoin his family in another country. This is why all boarders have been notified that Teves is a flight risk. However, the Timor Leste government assures us that he will not leave,” Asec Clavano stated.

“We are at the tail end of this process. We must simply trust their system,” he added.
