Department of Justice – National Prosecution Service (DOJ-NPS) and International Committee of the Red Cross enters into Memorandum of Understanding

07 August 2020

On July 30, 2020, a virtual signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Department of Justice—National Prosecution Service (DOJ-NPS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was held via Zoom between Prosecutor General Benedicto A. Malcontento and ICRC Head of Legal Department Atty. Katerina Kappos.

The MoU is an important milestone in enhancing the capacity of DOJ prosecutors in the field of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and in the country's domestic IHL laws such as Republic Act No. 9851 and Republic Act No. 11188. The MoU also reinforces the mandate of the DOJ-NPS to support specialized trainings and career development of DOJ prosecutors.

Almost simultaneously with the MoU signing, the ICRC and the NPS-Special Projects Division jointly trained a team of prosecutor-trainers that will design, develop and deliver a special training course on IHL for DOJ prosecutors.
