DOJ-OFC to host 4th ASEAN Competition Conference

30 June 2014

The Department of Justice (DOJ) through its Office for Competition (OFC) will host the 4th ASEAN Competition Conference (ACC) on 16-17 July 2014 at the Garden Ballroom of Edsa Shangri-La, Manila hotel in Mandaluyong City.

Secretary Leila M. De Lima will deliver the Welcoming Remarks.

With the theme “Building Blocks for Effective Enforcement of Competition Policy and Law (CPL),” the conference aims to promote competition policy for regional development and shape the direction of CPL implementation within ASEAN.

“The hosting of the 4th ACC is one of the initiatives of the OFC as previous Chair of the ASEAN Experts Group on Competition (AEGC) for 2013-2014. We see this as another opportunity for us to learn on how to improve the implementation of our existing competition laws and further develop a national competition policy anchored on economic justice for all,” said Secretary De Lima.

Ms. Keipiroon Kate Kohsuwan of Thailand, the current chair of the AEGC, will present an overview of the regional   framework of CPL in ASEAN as well as the key initiatives and deliverables of the AEGC under the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint 2009-2015.

Several panel discussions will be held on workable and innovative approaches for detecting and deterring anticompetitive conduct, both from public and private enforcement perspectives. Competition experts, practitioners, and stakeholders from Asia, US, EU, and other parts of the world will discuss the readiness of ASEAN Member States to introduce and implement national competition laws.

“We welcome every opportunity for us to share experiences and perspectives given that we are currently moving towards the enactment of a unified competition law. It is important for all businesses and the consuming public to appreciate why it is important for us to punish and further deter all forms of anti-competitive conduct or agreements in the market,” said Assistant Secretary Geronimo L. Sy, Head of the OFC.

The 4th ACC is being conducted with the support of the ASEAN-Australia- New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA) Competition Committee.
