DOJ has two new undersecretaries

The Department of Justice has two newly-appointed Undersecretaries: Ernesto L. Pineda and Macabangkit B. Lanto.
With an AB Political Science and a BS Psychology undergraduate degrees from the University of Sto. Tomas, Undersecretary Ernesto L. Pineda pursued his Bachelor of Laws degree as a full scholar in the same university and graduated Cum Laude, finishing 11th place in the 1964 Bar exams. A recipient of numerous awards both in the academe and the legal field, Usec Pineda used to be the Dean at the PLM Law Center, Graduate School of Law and College of Law and was recently awarded as Dean emeritus by the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.
He is president of several lawyer organizations such as the Vanguard of the Philippine Constitution, International Anti-Corruption Movement of the Philippines, Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Chapter President’s Congress and acts as chairman of the Committee on constitutional Reforms of the Philippine Trial Lawyers Association.
As an academician, he used to be vice-president of the Philippine Association of Law Schools for Luzon. At present, he is the Director of the Philippine Association of Law Professors and is a Bar Reviewer for civil law, legal, and judicial ethics at several universities in the country. Usec Pineda has authored several law books and is considered an authority as a writer and professor. He is married to Virginia Yumul and is blessed with six children.
If Undersecretary Pineda’s background is in the academe and private law practice, Undersecretary Macabangkit B. Lanto’s career is deeply rooted in public service. He started in the government in 1969 when he first worked at the Office of the Provincial Governor’s Office in Lanao del Sur. He then got elected as a Congressman representing the 2nd Legislative District of Lanao Del Norte from 1992-1994. He was appointed Undersecretary for Tourism Promotions at the Department of Tourism from 1996-1998. Prior to his appointment as DOJ undersecretary, he was designated as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Arab Republic of Egypt and Sudan.
A Bachelor of Laws degree holder from the University of the Philippines, USec Lanto was granted a Fullbright scholarship in New York University where he finished his Master’s Degree and completed academic requirements for a Ph.D. program at the same university. He is bestowed with six children with Hadja Llnang M. Lanto, a Senior Planning Project Development Officer at the National Electrification Administration in Manila.
Both Undersecretaries Pineda and Lanto vowed to use their knowledge of the law to maximum use and institute reforms at the DOJ.
