RECEIVES US GRANT TO CURB HUMAN TRAFFICKING Press Release Dept. of Justice

Justice Secretary Raul M. Gonzalez and US Ambassador Kristie Kenny signed today at the Department a US grant of $34,930.oo for purchase of office equipment for the NBIs Anti Human Trafficking Division.
The tools will support the bureaus ability to combat and investigate trafficking offenses eventually to more effective prosecution and convictions, Gonzalez said.
The Secretary also thank the US Embassy Manila for the support the US government accorded to the Philippine Anti-Trafficking in Persons initiatives through the US Agency for International Development and the Rule of Law Effectiveness Project(ROLE).
He mentioned the gains from the initiative against this global scourge more particularly with the convictions of seven (7) human traffickers, as cited by no less than the President in her SONA. The developments led to the lifting of the Philippines from Tier 2 Watchlist Category of the US State Department 2006 Report of Trafficking in Persons.
The Secretary said the grant will provide funds for the purchase of high-end surveillance equipment and vehicles and other necessary supplies that will augment the conduct of surveillance and rescue operations of victims by the NBI and other law enforcement agencies.
