DOJ Orders Investigation of School Betting
July 5, 2004
Acting Justice Secretary Ma. Merceditas Gutierrez today ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to exert all efforts in putting an end to the illegal sports betting proliferating in private schools in Metro Manila.
The Justice Secretary ordered NBI Director Reynaldo Wycoco to dispatch a team of investigators whose sole task is to investigate and arrest those involved in this illegal activity.
“Our children should be protected from these syndicates taking advantage of their vulnerability,” Gutierrez said. “The NBI can come up with ways to stop these illegal activities which tend to create havoc to the life of our youth.”
She said the government should not allow unscrupulous individuals to prey on the innocence of the youth in order to enrich themselves illegally.
Gutierrez likewise issued an appeal to parents and students alike to report to her Office those engaging in these activities and they will be assured of adequate protection.
As Chairperson of the Special Committee on the Protection of Children, Gutierrez also called on school authorities to exercise vigilance in stopping these illegal activities in their campuses.
This week, she will be calling for a dialogue with concerned school authorities in order to solicit their assistance in coming up with solutions that will combat this problem.
