Undersecretary Ramon J. Liwag singled out as acting Bureau of Corrections Director
May 7, 2003
Justice Secretary Simeon A. Datumanong has designated USEC Ramon J. Liwag as acting Director of the Bureau of Corrections. Liwag's appointment came following the 90-day preventive suspension order issued by Malacanang, through Administrative Order 72 against Corrections Chief Ricardo Macala.
Macala is facing alleged misconduct and nepotism charges before the Presidential Anti-Graft Commission (PAGC). The complaints were filed by several Bucor employees.
Datumanong dismissed controversies surrounding Liwag's designation as acting chief. He said that Liwag was chosen as Macala's replacement by virtue of his being the undersecretary in charge of the bureau.
If found guilty, Macala's offenses are punishable by suspension, disqualification or dismissal depending on the evidence.
