Prosecutors Urge Gonzalez Confirmation
March 17, 2005
In a resolution signed by the Chief Prosecutors Association; Inc. (CPROSA) around the country have urged the Commission on Appointments to confirm the appointment of Secretary Raul Gonzalez as Secretary of Justice, one of the most respected and outstanding legal minds in the country. The resolution cited Gonzalez’s diligence, dedication and knowledge of the law, making him most qualified for the position.
The concern the new Secretary has shown for the welfare of prosecutors is one of the reasons why the newly organized group has come out in support of Gonzalez. The resolution was promptly transmitted to the CA for notation.
After assuming office on September 01, 2004, Gonzalez begun the review of all finished resolutions submitted for his signature to see how prosecutors evaluate and interpret evidence and assess criminal cases. Gonzalez devised a system which gives priority to the review and resolution of aged cases, and initiated the audit of all pending cases and the inventory of evidence prosecutors have received for their safekeeping. It was noted that the assignment of cases for preliminary investigation and review has been denounced as a major source of corruption in the past.
In a related move, Gonzalez launched a full-blown investigation of reported anomalies in the National Prosecution Service (NPS), the Land Registration Authority (LRA), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Bureau of Immigration (BI) and other DOJ agencies. An internal job performance audit is also underway to gauge the effectiveness of the Department. It is getting quite clear that Gonzalez is indeed, a hands-on, result-oriented Cabinet executive
